For hundreds of years, people have been curious about the ways in which living things perceive the world around them, especially the senses: taste, touch, smell, sight, and hearing. Investigators had learned as early as the 17th century that the human eye is a form of camera and that the ear perceives sound by detecting the vibrations of sound waves in the air.
